I know it's rather easy to 'go with the flow' and to be a part of life as a spectator. To play the cards you have and hope for the best. To follow events as they unfold and to never put yourself on the line. I know it seems less painful than risking your precious energy.
I know a safe life seems attractive to you for many reasons.
I know the cocoon of your bubble seems hard and impenetrable.
I know it makes sense to keep yourself within the confines of society's expectations.
But I also know there is a part of you that is raging and screaming for more every day. A fire in you that burns with the curiosity of 'What if?'. Its flames are not always all-consuming, but you aren't always so lucky.
Sometimes the fire is so loud and so bright that everything in your life seems grey and flat compared to it.
And you may think that if you let the fire out, it will destroy everything all at once.
And yes, it might—but only if you keep bottling it up in such a small space where it cannot be contained.
This fire is not your enemy. It is the enemy of a system you have grown to sympathize with, even if it enslaves you.
It enslaves you through language, culture, socialization, and all their tentacles. Not all of them are bad or detrimental, of course. But there is a crux where, currently, the status quo rules the psyche way more than it has to.
The application of your willpower and your personal desires are at this crossroad. Their roots are dry and powdery because the fire burns, but you are not watering them enough.
And it's understandable. You are pushed and pressured from over and under, left and right, to do the 'right thing.' The thing that society wants you to do. The thing that the old you wants you to do. To stay in line. To stay safe. To comply.
Well, today I want you to consider that the thing you are running away from is the thing you want the most. And of equal importance: it's the thing that society needs, even if it doesn't know it yet.
The time you spend distracting yourself from your potential is time you could be spending reveling in this newness.
At first, there is a drag. A frustration. A quiet panic. There is a space that desperately wants to be filled.
If you are caught in that loop, you give in again and again. You soothe yourself momentarily, only to suffer the cycle all over again shortly after.
But I am done with that loop. I hope this newsletter and its chapters invigorate you to keep going, too.
There is a profound reward at the end of this. But the real prize is found in the integrity of the act itself. Of doing the thing. Of going to bed psychologically satiated.
There is no substance, no sensuality, and no luxury car that could ever replace this feeling: the absolute knowledge of your own self-determination. Not the faint hope of it showing up, but your own focused attention and forward motion.
It is something no one can ever take away from you.
Most importantly, it is a road that will actually lead you somewhere.
I know you want to know where. It's natural.
So make sure to aim well...
Roam before you aim if you need to. But aim. Aim with me.
There is no need to resent the status quo. All you can do is make your own, chiseling away at your own parameters and your own values.
If you give up on yourself and your ideas, the suffering will only compile as time goes on. Yet, if you take small steps every day toward that one goal, you will live with the pride of that knowledge. You can bask in its integrity.
This will breed the confidence to do more and grow more. The muscle will strengthen, and the work will start to become much easier.
My wish for you this week is to Write, Initiate, and Proact:
Write what you want. It can be big or small. Whatever is bothering you right now and needs resolution. But it must be personal to you—not for the job you hate. Write it down physically on paper, not on your phone. This physical action embeds the intent deeply into your psyche.
Initiate it by being open. Stay curious and open-minded to how the resolution will come about. Be observant. Make space for things to show up. New things always come in new ways.
Proact when the opportunity arises. Act on it, even if it's a tiny action. It all counts.
Follow the breadcrumbs. They will lead you home.
See you in there,
Knowhere
